The Smile Fixers: What Orthodontists Really Do

A smile does more than light up a room, it reflects confidence, comfort, and overall health. But when teeth don’t align properly or jaw problems go untreated, that smile might hide more than it shows. That’s where orthodontists come in.

At Stonehaven Dental & Orthodontics – Burleson, we believe orthodontic care is about more than straight teeth. It’s about solving real functional issues like bite problems, jaw discomfort, and oral habits that affect long-term health. Whether you’re an adult considering Invisalign® or a parent exploring braces for your child, understanding the real role of an orthodontist can help you make the best decision for your smile.

TL;DR — What Orthodontists Really Do

Orthodontists are dental specialists focused on correcting teeth alignment, bite problems, and jaw issues. At Stonehaven Dental & Orthodontics – Burleson, we treat common orthodontic problems such as crooked teeth, bad bites, and jaw misalignment using braces and Invisalign®. Our expert care improves both smile appearance and oral function, helping patients from Burleson, Joshua, Rendon, Crowley, and nearby areas achieve lasting dental health.

Why Visit an Orthodontist?

Orthodontists complete advanced training beyond dental school, specializing in diagnosing and treating malocclusions (bite problems) and complex alignment issues. Unlike general dentists, orthodontists focus exclusively on how teeth and jaws work together — not just how they look.

This expertise allows them to identify issues early, recommend the best treatment, and use specialized tools to fix problems that could otherwise cause pain, difficulty chewing, or long-term dental damage.

Common Orthodontic Problems We Fix

Orthodontic problems affect millions of people, from children to adults. The most common conditions we treat include:

  • Crowded or crooked teeth: When there isn’t enough space in the mouth, teeth can overlap or twist.
  • Overbite and underbite: When upper and lower jaws don’t align properly, causing bite issues.
  • Crossbite and open bite: Misalignment that affects chewing and speaking.
  • Jaw alignment issues: Including TMJ disorders and jaw discomfort.
  • Spacing problems: Gaps between teeth that affect function and appearance.

If left untreated, these issues can cause tooth wear, jaw pain, headaches, and even affect overall health.

Fixing a Bad Bite: More Than Just Appearance

A “bad bite” can cause chronic problems beyond an uneven smile. Improper alignment can lead to:

  • Difficulty chewing or speaking
  • Jaw pain and tension headaches
  • Increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease due to hard-to-clean areas
  • TMJ disorders that affect jaw movement and cause discomfort

At our dental office, we offer customized orthodontic treatment plans using braces or Invisalign® to gently correct your bite and jaw position, restoring both function and confidence.

Braces and Invisalign®: Personalized Solutions

No two smiles are the same — and neither are treatment plans. We provide personalized care that fits your lifestyle and needs:

  • Traditional braces: Ideal for complex cases and patients of all ages, braces use brackets and wires to gradually move teeth into place.
  • Invisalign clear aligners: A discreet and removable alternative for teens and adults, Invisalign® is perfect for those seeking flexibility without sacrificing results.

Our experienced orthodontists will evaluate your smile and recommend the best option tailored to your goals.

When Should You See an Orthodontist?

Early intervention can prevent many orthodontic problems from worsening. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. However, orthodontic care is also highly effective for teens and adults looking to improve their smile and oral health.

Consider scheduling a consultation if you notice:

  • Crooked or crowded teeth
  • Problems biting or chewing
  • Jaw pain or clicking
  • Speech difficulties
  • Dissatisfaction with your smile

Our Burleson office welcomes patients from Joshua, Rendon, Crowley, and surrounding communities to receive expert orthodontic care.

Sammy, Connor, the front desk staff, Dental Hygenist and especially Dr. Town are amazing! It’s great to see the same faces everyone I get a cleaning! Sammy makes the experience comfortable and welcome. Connor may be quiet but he always does a great job! The dental hygienist always remembers me and my kids. Sorry I cant remember her name but she knows who I am and that’s what matters:) Thankful for this staff and the great care they give to my family!

We’ve always had a good experience at Stonehaven. The women at the front desk are always cheerful and helpful. I love the hygienists, they always make my children and I feel comfortable and informed. I have pretty high dental anxiety and they’ve never tried to minimize my fears- but they listen to me, and help me feel as comfortable as possible. The dentists and orthodontists have been great! No issues at all. (I just wish my daughter was better at flossing, but we’re working on that!)
