Can You Get Cosmetic Dentistry While Pregnant?

Pregnancy brings plenty of changes to your body, your schedule, and even your dental care. One common question we hear from expecting patients is whether it’s safe to get cosmetic dental treatments during pregnancy?

Most routine dental care, like cleanings and exams, is not only safe but recommended during pregnancy. But when it comes to elective cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening or veneers, it’s usually best to put it on hold until your baby arrives. These treatments aren’t urgent, and while many are low-risk, they may involve things like X-rays, local anesthesia, or extended time in the dental chair, which can be uncomfortable or unnecessary during pregnancy.

In this blog, we’ll break down when it’s okay to move forward and when it’s best to wait, so you can feel comfortable during your smile transformation.

Reasons to Postpone Cosmetic Dentistry During Pregnancy

Cosmetic dentistry is elective by nature which means it’s not essential to your oral health. Dentists generally recommend postponing most cosmetic treatments during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester.

Here’s why waiting is a better choice:

  • Use of X-rays: While dental X-rays use minimal radiation, any exposure during pregnancy carries a small potential risk to the developing fetus, when major organs are forming.
  • Anesthesia considerations: Some cosmetic procedures involve numbing agents. While many are safe, it’s best to minimize medications whenever possible.
  • Risk of nausea or discomfort: Long appointments can be difficult when you’re dealing with morning sickness, a sensitive gag reflex, or back discomfort in later trimesters.
  • Risk vs. benefit: Since cosmetic procedures don’t impact your health or your baby’s, most can wait until after delivery with no downside.

Before Any Dental Procedure Consult Your Dentist

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, it’s important to inform your dentist early on, even in the first trimester. This allows for careful consideration of the timing and type of treatment, especially for procedures that may involve anesthesia, prolonged chair time, or dental materials that should be avoided during pregnancy.

A few precautions to consider:

  • Consult with your OB-GYN before scheduling any elective dental procedures.
  • Review all medications and supplements with both your dentist and doctor to avoid potential interactions.
  • Assess your physical comfort with sitting for extended periods, particularly in the later stages of pregnancy.

Open communication between your dental and prenatal care providers can help ensure that any dental treatment is safe and appropriate for both you and your baby.

Procedures Generally Advised Against During Pregnancy

Here are a few cosmetic procedures dentists usually recommend postponing:

  • Teeth whitening – Both in-office and at-home whitening agents may contain peroxide levels that we prefer to avoid during pregnancy.
  • Porcelain veneers – These often require reshaping enamel and involve bonding agents, which are best delayed until postpartum.
  • Dental bonding (for cosmetic reasons) – While bonding material is generally safe, the procedure can often wait unless it’s addressing a functional issue.
  • Cosmetic gum contouring – This may involve surgery or laser treatment, which can be uncomfortable or unnecessary during pregnancy.

If you are looking for any cosmetic dentistry in Waco that has been falling into this category, we’ll help you evaluate the risks and benefits.

Procedures That Are Considered Safe During Pregnancy

Some minor or non-invasive procedures may still be safe during pregnancy, particularly in the second trimester, when many patients feel more comfortable.

Generally safe procedures of dental care include:

  • Routine cleanings and exams
  • Tooth polishing (non-whitening)
  • Emergency or restorative care (when needed)
  • Orthodontic checkups and minor adjustments
  • Tooth-colored fillings or restorations

If a dental procedure is necessary during pregnancy, consult with your OB-GYN. They will carefully consider the timing, inform you about potential risks, and coordinate with your dental care provider when appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What cosmetic dental procedures are requested by pregnant women?

Common requests include teeth whitening, dental bonding for minor chips, and orthodontic adjustments. While interest remains high, most of these are elective and usually postponed until after delivery.

What types of anesthesia are safe during pregnancy for dental procedures?

Local anesthesia like lidocaine is generally safe when used in moderation. Sedation methods such as nitrous oxide or oral sedatives are typically avoided, especially in the first trimester.

How can I manage dental anxiety during pregnancy?

Try deep breathing, calming music, or scheduling visits during the second trimester when discomfort is lower. Let your dental provider know about your anxiety so they can make adjustments to help you feel more at ease.

Sammy, Connor, the front desk staff, Dental Hygenist and especially Dr. Town are amazing! It’s great to see the same faces everyone I get a cleaning! Sammy makes the experience comfortable and welcome. Connor may be quiet but he always does a great job! The dental hygienist always remembers me and my kids. Sorry I cant remember her name but she knows who I am and that’s what matters:) Thankful for this staff and the great care they give to my family!

We’ve always had a good experience at Stonehaven. The women at the front desk are always cheerful and helpful. I love the hygienists, they always make my children and I feel comfortable and informed. I have pretty high dental anxiety and they’ve never tried to minimize my fears- but they listen to me, and help me feel as comfortable as possible. The dentists and orthodontists have been great! No issues at all. (I just wish my daughter was better at flossing, but we’re working on that!)
