What Foods Do You Need to Avoid During Orthodontic Treatment?

Starting orthodontic treatment is an exciting step. Whether you have braces or are wearing clear aligners, you’re on your way to a healthier, more confident smile. But getting great results doesn’t depend only on what happens at the dental office; it also depends on how you care for your teeth at home.

One important aspect of care that our Stonehaven Dental & Orthodontics patients need to consider is their food choices.

The way you eat during treatment can either help things go smoothly or cause setbacks. Certain foods can damage your braces, stain your aligners, or make it harder to keep your teeth clean.

As a trusted orthodontist in Waco, we’ll guide our patients who have started orthodontic treatment on which food types to avoid. We’ll also offer smart choices so you don’t have to miss out on the meals you enjoy.

Why Food Restrictions Are Important

Braces and aligners work hard to move your teeth into the right place, but they’re also a little delicate. Eating the wrong foods can break brackets, bend wires, or stain your aligners. That can slow down your progress and even lead to extra trips to the orthodontist.

Some foods also make it harder to keep your teeth clean, which can lead to cavities or gum problems. So being mindful about what’s on your plate is a smart part of the journey.

Foods to Avoid with Traditional Braces

If you’re wearing metal or ceramic braces, there are a few types of food you’ll want to avoid. Here’s a closer look:

Sticky Foods

Sticky foods can easily get caught in your braces and be hard to clean out. They can also pull on the brackets and wires, which may cause them to loosen.

Avoid:

  • Chewing gum
  • Caramel
  • Taffy
  • Gummy candies

Hard or Crunchy Foods

These foods can snap a bracket right off or bend a wire, and that means an extra visit to the orthodontist, and maybe even longer treatment time.

Avoid:

  • Popcorn (even the unpopped kernels can be risky)
  • Nuts
  • Ice
  • Hard candy
  • Raw carrots and apples (unless cut into very small pieces)

Chewy Foods

To prevent braces from loosening or causing discomfort, it’s best to avoid tough, chewy foods that create excessive pressure.

Avoid:

  • Bagels
  • Licorice
  • Thick crust pizza
  • Tough meat (like jerky)

Sugary Foods and Drinks

Sugary stuff can lead to plaque buildup around your braces, which raises your risk of cavities. It’s not about cutting out sugar completely—but be smart about how often you have it, and brush right after if you do.

Limit:

  • Soda
  • Candy
  • Sweetened juices
  • Cookies and cakes

Foods You Have to Bite Into

Taking a big bite out of something hard can knock a bracket loose. If you really want to eat these foods, try cutting them into small pieces first.

Be careful with:

  • Apples
  • Corn on the cob
  • Crusty bread
  • Whole carrots

What About Clear Aligners Like Invisalign?

Aligners don’t come with as many food restrictions, but they do require a different kind of care. Always take out your aligners before eating or drinking anything except for plain water.

Why?

  • Hot drinks can warp the plastic
  • Colored drinks can stain them
  • Food particles can get trapped, leading to bad breath or tooth decay

After eating, brush your teeth before putting the aligners back in. If you’re out and can’t brush, at least rinse your mouth with water. A regular cleaning routine for your aligners will help keep your teeth healthy and your orthodontic treatment on track.

Tips for Eating Smart During Treatment

Here are a few simple ways to enjoy your meals without risking damage to your braces or aligners:

  • Cut food into small bites – It’s easier to chew and gentler on your braces.
  • Cook raw vegetables – Steamed or roasted veggies are much safer than raw ones.
  • Stick to softer snacks – Think yogurt, mashed potatoes, bananas, smoothies, or soft cheeses.
  • Stay hydrated – Drinking water helps rinse away leftover food and sugar.

These small habits can really help keep your treatment on track.

Sammy, Connor, the front desk staff, Dental Hygenist and especially Dr. Town are amazing! It’s great to see the same faces everyone I get a cleaning! Sammy makes the experience comfortable and welcome. Connor may be quiet but he always does a great job! The dental hygienist always remembers me and my kids. Sorry I cant remember her name but she knows who I am and that’s what matters:) Thankful for this staff and the great care they give to my family!

We’ve always had a good experience at Stonehaven. The women at the front desk are always cheerful and helpful. I love the hygienists, they always make my children and I feel comfortable and informed. I have pretty high dental anxiety and they’ve never tried to minimize my fears- but they listen to me, and help me feel as comfortable as possible. The dentists and orthodontists have been great! No issues at all. (I just wish my daughter was better at flossing, but we’re working on that!)
