Saliva Protects Your Teeth
Saliva is 98% water, but also contains electrolytes, enzymes, and various antibacterial compounds. A good amount of saliva can help to keep your teeth free of debris, and clear food particles from your teeth throughout the day. This can protect tooth enamel and prevent decay. One way to support a healthy supply of saliva is to sip water throughout the day, staying hydrated and encouraging a healthy and moist environment for the soft tissues in your mouth.
Saliva Fights Germs, and Prevents Bad Breath
Clearing away the food particles from your teeth is one of the first steps of preventing bad breath. The drier your mouth is, the more likely germs can multiply, which can increase your risk for bad breath, and even cavities. One way you can help it along is to chew sugar free gum. This can help to maintain production of saliva. Other things you can do to prevent dryness in the mouth are to avoid consuming large amounts of caffeine, and staying hydrated.
The Dangers of Dry Mouth
Suffering from dry mouth, or Xerostomia, increases risk for dental issues such as cavities, gum disease, difficulty swallowing, and loss of taste. While there are things you can do to help prevent or treat dry mouth, a dentist may be able to help you consider how to best care for your oral health if you are at risk for dry mouth.

We’ve always had a good experience at Stonehaven. The women at the front desk are always cheerful and helpful. I love the hygienists, they always make my children and I feel comfortable and informed. I have pretty high dental anxiety and they’ve never tried to minimize my fears- but they listen to me, and help me feel as comfortable as possible. The dentists and orthodontists have been great! No issues at all. (I just wish my daughter was better at flossing, but we’re working on that!)
