Accidents happen when we least expect them and losing a tooth due to trauma can be both painful and frightening. Knowing exactly what to do if you or someone you love knocks out a tooth can make all the difference in saving it and preventing further damage.

In this blog, we’ll help you understand the critical actions to take immediately after a tooth is knocked out, helping you stay calm and act quickly until you can get professional care.

Understanding a Knocked-Out Tooth Emergency

A knocked-out tooth, also called an avulsed tooth, is a serious dental emergency that occurs when a tooth is completely dislodged from its socket. This often happens due to accidents like falls, sports injuries, or other trauma. With prompt and proper care, there’s a strong chance the tooth can be saved.

Step-by-Step: What to Do If You Knock Out a Tooth

1. Stay Calm and Find the Tooth

First, try to remain calm, panic can make the situation harder to manage. Locate the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the part you normally see), being careful not to touch the root. Touching the root can damage the cells needed for the tooth to successfully reattach.

2. Rinse the Tooth Gently

If the tooth is dirty, rinse it carefully under cool running water or milk. Avoid scrubbing or using soap or chemicals, as this can harm the delicate root cells.

3. Attempt to Reposition the Tooth

If you feel comfortable, try to gently place the tooth back into its socket. Make sure it’s facing the right way and push it in carefully until it feels secure. If this isn’t possible, don’t force it.

4. Keep the Tooth Moist

Keeping the tooth moist is essential for preserving it. If you can’t put the tooth back in the socket, place it in a container of milk, saline solution, or use a tooth preservation kit if available. Avoid storing it in water, as this can damage the cells.

5. Control Bleeding and Protect the Area

Use a clean piece of gauze or cloth to apply gentle pressure to the bleeding gum area to help stop the bleeding. You can also use a cold compress on your face near the injury to reduce swelling.

When to Seek Emergency Dental Care

A knocked-out tooth always requires professional attention. Immediate care not only improves the chances of saving the tooth but also helps prevent infection and other complications. If you experience any severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, or other injuries along with the tooth loss, don’t hesitate to seek emergency medical care.

Preventing Tooth Knockouts in the Future

While accidents can’t always be avoided, you can reduce your risk by:

  • Wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard during sports or physical activities.
  • Avoiding chewing on hard objects like ice or pens.
  • Maintaining regular dental checkups to keep your teeth strong and healthy.

Sammy, Connor, the front desk staff, Dental Hygenist and especially Dr. Town are amazing! It’s great to see the same faces everyone I get a cleaning! Sammy makes the experience comfortable and welcome. Connor may be quiet but he always does a great job! The dental hygienist always remembers me and my kids. Sorry I cant remember her name but she knows who I am and that’s what matters:) Thankful for this staff and the great care they give to my family!

We’ve always had a good experience at Stonehaven. The women at the front desk are always cheerful and helpful. I love the hygienists, they always make my children and I feel comfortable and informed. I have pretty high dental anxiety and they’ve never tried to minimize my fears- but they listen to me, and help me feel as comfortable as possible. The dentists and orthodontists have been great! No issues at all. (I just wish my daughter was better at flossing, but we’re working on that!)
