Pain Relief Options For Teens Using Invisalign®: What Works?

By Stonehaven Dental & Orthodontics | March 6, 2025

Invisalign is a transformative option for teens looking to straighten their teeth without metal braces. Indeed, it is a comfortable and exciting approach to fixing smiles, but it initially comes with some side effects. Discomfort and pain are the prime concerns for newbies. This happens due to their functionality process. Applying slight pressure moves teeth slowly to their position, which causes temporary sensitivity and soreness while wearing the first trays or transitioning to new ones. Though a Waco orthodontist can provide additional guidance, you must know that it is a natural part of the process. In the meantime, understanding how to manage soreness makes the treatment a comfortable experience.

Is Wearing Aligners Painful?

No, treating your oral health with invisible braces is not stressful. Although they might cause slight discomfort and soreness, they usually go away independently or can be managed at home.

However,  this is generally less intense than traditional braces, which causes cuts and slits inside the mouth. It is a mild procedure, and not everyone can feel the same.

Typically, the tenderness subsides in a few days. However, if it lasts longer than a week, it indicates an issue with the tray’s fit or movement. Get it checked by a dental care provider who will make the necessary adjustments.

Effective Pain Relief Solutions For Invisalign

Your teeth are shifting to their respective places, forming an irritating alignment. This does not mean you have to bear with it! Here are a few tried and tested remedies for managing Invisalign pain:

  1. Apply Cold Compress

A cold compress on the outer sides of your mouth can numb the area. Apply it for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. This process minimizes swelling and makes the adjustment easier.

  1. Use Orthodontic Wax For Sharp Edges

Some aligners have rough areas that scratch the gums. Orthodontic wax provides a smooth seal, stopping irritation. It can be used in small amounts to prevent strain.

  1. Prescribed Pain Relievers

When soreness becomes unbearable, over-the-counter painkillers are an option. Drugs such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen stop inflammation and alleviate distress. However, be sure to adhere to the prescribed dosage and avoid overusing them.

  1. Switch Aligners Before Bedtime

Most teens find it simpler to adapt by switching to a fresh aligner before sleeping. This can be an effective Invisalign discomfort solution to reduce the initial ache overnight and get a worry-free rest.

  1. Include Soft Food In The Diet

Hard or chewy foods can increase soreness. In the first few days after using a new aligner, eat soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, or smoothies to reduce strain on the teeth.

  1. Drink Plenty Of Water

Sipping cold water will help calm irritation. Keeping your mouth moist prevents dryness, which contributes to discomfort.

How Long Will The Pain Last?

Pain relief with Invisalign is usually quicker than with metallic braces. It does not cause any wear or tear in the mouth. You might experience this mild discomfort lasting a few days after switching aligners.

Also, it can trigger to its most within 24-48 hours after the procedure and decreases as your teeth adjust. If it persists beyond a week, consult an orthodontist in Waco.

Achieve A Beautiful Smile, Stress-Free

There is no need to panic if the teeth ache. Since it is temporary, your body will adapt, and the soreness will decrease each time you change to a new set. Some little adjustments and proactiveness are required to achieve a flawless smile.

Sammy, Connor, the front desk staff, Dental Hygenist and especially Dr. Town are amazing! It’s great to see the same faces everyone I get a cleaning! Sammy makes the experience comfortable and welcome. Connor may be quiet but he always does a great job! The dental hygienist always remembers me and my kids. Sorry I cant remember her name but she knows who I am and that’s what matters:) Thankful for this staff and the great care they give to my family!

We’ve always had a good experience at Stonehaven. The women at the front desk are always cheerful and helpful. I love the hygienists, they always make my children and I feel comfortable and informed. I have pretty high dental anxiety and they’ve never tried to minimize my fears- but they listen to me, and help me feel as comfortable as possible. The dentists and orthodontists have been great! No issues at all. (I just wish my daughter was better at flossing, but we’re working on that!)
